What makes a thumbnail work, in any tool
The tool matters less than three choices you make before you open it. These apply to a Canva design and to an AI idea alike.
One idea per thumbnail
Viewers decide fast while they scroll. Show one thing: a face reacting, a place, a before and after, or a number. If you need two sentences to explain the picture, it holds too much.
Text that adds, not repeats
The title already sits under the thumbnail. Use the thumbnail text for what the title does not say: the stake ("7 DAYS"), the feeling ("STUCK"), or a question. Three to five words is plenty.
Readable at phone size
Many viewers watch on a phone. Before you upload, shrink the thumbnail and check the face, the text and the main object. The thumbnail preview tool shows it on the home page, in search and on a phone.
When switching makes sense
If you design each thumbnail by hand and enjoy it, Canva is a fine home. If you post often, make thumbnails late at night, or keep guessing which version would win, try starting from the video instead: describe it, compare three ideas, change what you want in plain words, and let YouTube Test & Compare pick the winner.
