YouTube Shorts thumbnail ideas
for covers that work in a vertical grid.

A YouTube Shorts thumbnail is a vertical cover, not a small 16:9 thumbnail. It shows up where Shorts sit as tiles, such as your channel page and search, so it needs one subject and two or three words in the safe middle of the frame. Below: 6 original examples, five layouts, the size YouTube recommends and how to change the cover.

The YouTube Shorts thumbnail style, rule by rule

Palette

  • Shorts red #FF2D2DOne accent word, an arrow or a number badge
  • Night black #0F0F12Dark backgrounds and text bands that hold white words
  • Hook yellow #FFE14DThe hook word, or the result in a before and after
  • Clean white #FFFFFFMain text with a dark outline
  • Series teal #14B8A6The colour that marks one series, cover after cover
Composition
A 9:16 frame with the subject and the words in the middle band. Keep the top and bottom edges quiet: titles, buttons and progress bars can cover them depending on where the Short is shown. One subject, large, centred or slightly off-centre.
Text
Two to four words in capitals, big enough to read on a tile the width of a thumb. Heavy sans-serif, white or yellow with a thick dark outline, placed in the middle third.
Faces & expressions
One clear face reaction or none at all: wide eyes, a grin, a frown at the camera. On a vertical cover, a face can be shown from the chest up and still read well. Synthetic people only.
Background
A frame from the Short itself, darkened or blurred, or a flat colour that stays the same across a series so your Shorts tab looks like a set.
Props & details
  • A number badge for list and series Shorts
  • A split line for before and after
  • A red arrow pointing at the result
  • A short label band in the series colour
Layout recipes

Five layouts for YouTube Shorts thumbnails

  1. Before After

The cover is split into two stacked halves: the before on top, the result below. Ideal for transformations, recipes, room makeovers and edits, where the result is the reason to watch.

  2. Face Hook

One face from the chest up, centred, with a two or three word hook across the middle. Works for talking Shorts, stories and opinions.

  3. Result First

Show the finished thing big and in focus: the dish, the drawing, the trick shot landing. No face needed. The words name the result, not the process.

  4. Series Card

The same frame every time: one series colour, one number badge, one changing subject. Viewers who open your channel see a matching row of covers and know what each Short is.

  5. Question Card

A Shorts cover is a different object

A regular YouTube thumbnail is a 16:9 image that sells a video before anyone sees it. A YouTube Shorts thumbnail works differently. In the swipe feed, the Short starts playing straight away, so nobody sees the cover there. The cover matters where Shorts appear as tiles: your channel's Shorts tab, search results and hashtag pages. There, viewers compare several vertical tiles side by side and pick one.

That changes the design. The frame is 9:16, tall and narrow. The tile is small. And parts of it can be covered by the title or by buttons, depending on where it is shown.

The safe middle band

Put everything important in the middle of the frame: the face, the object and the words. Leave the top and bottom edges for background. A rule that works everywhere: if you split the cover into five horizontal strips, keep the text and the subject inside the middle three.

How to change a Shorts thumbnail

YouTube offers two routes, and they are not the same.

  • In the YouTube app: you choose a frame from the Short, before you upload or later from your video list (More, then Edit). You can add text and filters to that frame.
  • In YouTube Studio on a computer: you can upload your own image. Open Content, choose Shorts, edit the Short and click Upload file under Thumbnail. YouTube says this needs a verified account and that changes can take time to appear.

If you only use your phone, a simple trick is to start the Short with your designed cover as a still for a moment, then select that frame.

Size

YouTube recommends a 9:16 image for Shorts covers, with 2160 × 3840 pixels as the recommended resolution and a minimum height of 640 pixels. Designing at 1080 × 1920 keeps the same shape with a lighter file. For regular videos, the YouTube thumbnail size guide has the 16:9 numbers.

Five layouts for Shorts

  • Before and after: two stacked halves, the result at the bottom.
  • Face hook: one face from the chest up, three words across the middle.
  • Result first: the finished dish, drawing or trick, big and sharp.
  • Series card: one colour and one number badge, every episode.
  • Question card: a question the Short answers, with one clue object.

Text that survives a narrow tile

Two to four words in capitals, in a heavy sans-serif with a thick outline. Narrow tiles punish long words, so prefer "FIRST TRY" to "UNBELIEVABLE". The YouTube thumbnail fonts guide lists free fonts that stay readable at small sizes.

Make the opening match the cover

Because the swipe feed shows the video, not the cover, the first second of the Short does the job of a thumbnail for most viewers. Open on the same image as the cover: the same face, the same result, the same words. Viewers who come from your channel page then get exactly what the tile promised.

If you also post the same clip on TikTok, the TikTok thumbnail ideas page covers the cover rules there. For your long videos, test your 16:9 thumbnail in the YouTube thumbnail preview and compare two versions with the thumbnail tester.

Checklist

Do this, not that

Do

  • Design in 9:16 and keep the words and the subject in the middle band.
  • Use two to four words, big enough to read on a narrow tile.
  • Pick one series colour and reuse it so your Shorts tab looks like a set.
  • Check that the opening seconds match the cover, so the click keeps its promise.

Don't

  • Don't shrink a 16:9 thumbnail into the vertical frame; it ends up tiny.
  • Don't put text at the very top or bottom, where titles and buttons can sit.
  • Don't write a full sentence; the title already does that.
  • Don't use a cover that shows something the Short never shows.
FAQ

Questions about YouTube Shorts thumbnails

How to change YouTube Shorts thumbnail after upload?
There are two ways. In the YouTube app, open your channel's video list, tap More on the Short, tap Edit, pick a new frame from the video and tap Done; you can also add text and filters there. On a computer, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, select Shorts, edit the Short and use Upload file under Thumbnail to add your own image. YouTube says the Studio option needs a verified account.
What is the YouTube Shorts thumbnail size?
YouTube recommends a 9:16 image for Shorts covers uploaded in Studio, and lists 2160 × 3840 pixels as the recommended resolution, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG both work. Design at 1080 × 1920 if your editor struggles with large files; it is still 9:16. A regular video thumbnail, by contrast, is 16:9.
Can I upload a custom thumbnail for YouTube Shorts on my phone?
In the YouTube app you choose a frame from the Short, before or after you upload it, and you can add text and filters to that frame. Uploading a separate image is done in YouTube Studio on a computer. A simple workaround on the phone is to put your designed cover as a short still at the start of the clip and pick that frame.
Where do people see a YouTube Shorts cover?
Mostly where Shorts appear as tiles instead of playing straight away: your channel page, search results and hashtag pages. In the swipe feed the Short starts playing at once, so the first second of the video does the job of the cover there. That is why the cover and the opening frame should look alike.
What makes a good YouTube Shorts cover?
One subject and two to four words, placed in the middle of a 9:16 frame. Show the result, the face or the question that makes someone tap, and keep the top and bottom edges quiet. If you post a series, reuse the same colour and number badge so the covers look like a set on your channel.
Is there a free YouTube Shorts thumbnail maker?
Any free image editor with a 1080 × 1920 canvas works with the layouts on this page. If you would rather describe your Short and pick from several options, the Base.Tube Studio generates thumbnails in these styles with synthetic people. Choose a layout, describe the moment and keep the one you like.
