  • Ember orange #FF7A1ARim light and skin tones against teal

Composition
One character, cut out or framed tight, on one side. The question on the other side or across the top. Sometimes a red circle around a small detail in the background. Nothing else.
Text
Two to four words ending with a question mark, in heavy condensed capitals, yellow or white with a black outline. The question is about the character: what he did, what he knows, whether he is lying.
Faces & expressions
Serious and a bit ambiguous: a stare, a smirk, a worried frown. The contrast between a dramatic face and a slightly silly question is what made the thumbnails funny out of context.
Background
A dark or colour-graded scene from the story: a battlefield, a lab, a throne room, a city at night.
Props & details
  • A red circle around one background detail
  • Cinematic colour grading, teal and orange
  • A blurred scene from the story behind the character

Where the meme comes from

New Rockstars is a YouTube channel that breaks down films and series: theories, Easter eggs, endings. For years its thumbnails followed the same formula: one character from the story, framed close, and a short question in heavy yellow or white capitals. On its own, each thumbnail was a normal piece of channel branding.

Then people started using them as reaction images. The first big one was WHAT WAS HE COOKING?, from a November 2020 video about Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. A villain with a grave face next to a question about cooking was funny out of context, and it became a way to say "what was this person thinking?". In 2022, DOES HE KNOW? (the Riddler from The Batman) went viral, followed by WHY IS HE LYING? and many more. Today "New Rockstars thumbnail" is shorthand for the whole format.

Why the formula works

  • One question, nothing else. The viewer reads it in under a second.
  • A serious face. The drama of the character makes the question feel urgent, and slightly absurd, which helps both clicks and memes.
  • A promise. A question in a thumbnail tells the viewer the video holds the answer.
  • Consistency. The same font, colours and framing made the channel's videos recognisable in a crowded feed, which is why the format was so easy to turn into a meme.

How to make a thumbnail in this style

  • Write the question first. Two to four words, ending with a question mark, about the character: WHAT WAS HE COOKING?, IS HE GONE?, WHO IS THAT?
  • Create an original character. Never a film still or an actor. A generated character that fits the story's genre works.
  • Frame it close. Face and shoulders on one side, eyes readable.
  • Grade it. Teal shadows, orange skin and highlights, a little grain.
  • Write the caption. Heavy condensed capitals, yellow or white, thick black outline, on the other side or along the top.
  • Optional circle. A red circle around one small background detail for Easter-egg videos.
  • Keep the bottom-right corner clear for the video length.

Use the question honestly

The format is a promise: the video answers the question. If it does not, viewers leave quickly, and the format loses its value for your channel. The question should be the real hook of the video, not a decoration.

Three captions from this family have their own pages: does he know, why is he lying and who is he. For the wider world of meme thumbnails, see our YouTube thumbnail memes page.

Check before you upload

Put the thumbnail in the YouTube thumbnail preview to make sure the question is readable at feed size, and compare two questions with the thumbnail tester. Export at 1280 × 720; the YouTube thumbnail size guide has the limits. Real performance only shows up in YouTube Studio once the video is live.

Checklist

Do this, not that

Do

  • Ask one short question about the character, in two to four words.
  • Pair a serious face with the question; the contrast is the hook.
  • Use teal and orange grading and a thick black outline on the text.
  • Make sure the video answers the question.
  • Leave the bottom-right corner clear for the video length.

Don't

  • Don't use film stills, posters or actors' faces; build original characters.
  • Don't copy the channel's thumbnails or a famous meme frame.
  • Don't stack several questions; one per thumbnail.
  • Don't suggest the video comes from the channel that made the meme.
FAQ

Questions about New Rockstars-style thumbnails

What is the New Rockstars thumbnail meme?
It is a series of reaction images taken from the thumbnails of New Rockstars, a YouTube channel that discusses films and series. Each thumbnail shows a character with a short question in capitals. Out of context, the serious faces and blunt questions are funny, so people post them as replies on X, Tumblr and Reddit.
What was the first New Rockstars thumbnail meme?
The best-known early one is "What Was He Cooking?". On November 29, 2020 the channel posted a video about Thanos in Avengers: Endgame with that caption, and the thumbnail was shared as a reaction image within days. "Does He Know?" followed in 2022 and became the most popular of the series.
Which captions became memes?
The best known are WHAT WAS HE COOKING?, DOES HE KNOW?, WHY IS HE LYING?, WHAT HAPPENED TO SHAME? and DO WE DESERVE DESTRUCTION? Know Your Meme lists dozens more. New ones still appear, and the channel's own team has joked about it.
Is this the same as a Marvel thumbnail meme?
Largely. Many of the best-known images come from videos about Marvel films, so people search for a "marvel thumbnail meme" when they mean this series. The formula itself works for any film, series, game or book theory.
How do I make a movie theory thumbnail in this style?
Pick the one question your video answers. Generate or draw an original character that fits the story, frame it close, grade it teal and orange, and write the question in two to four heavy yellow capitals with a black outline. Check it at phone size before uploading.
