What the format is
Death Battle is a web series built on one question: who would win? Two characters from different universes are matched up, their abilities are analysed, and an animated fight settles it. Its thumbnails answer the "who" before the viewer even reads the title: two fighters, face to face, each on their own colour, with a large VS between them.
The VS thumbnail is older than the show, from fighting-game select screens to boxing posters. But many people now search for a Death Battle thumbnail template when they want that matchup look for their own videos.
Why the VS layout works
- Instant story. Two sides, one winner. The viewer understands the premise in a fraction of a second.
- Built-in question. A matchup always raises "who wins?", and the only way to find out is to watch.
- Clear colour code. Red against blue, fire against ice: the two halves are two camps, even at phone size.
- Symmetry. Two fighters of equal size on a central axis feel balanced and dramatic, like a poster.
How to build a versus thumbnail
- Split the frame. A diagonal line from top to bottom feels more dynamic than a straight vertical one. Add sparks or lightning along it.
- Pick two contrasting colours. One per side, saturated.
- Place the fighters. One per half, facing the centre, about the same size, with their signature weapon or power visible.
- Add the VS. Huge, centred on the split line, metallic gold or white with a black outline.
- Names are optional. If you add them, keep them short and at the top.
- Keep the bottom-right corner clear for the video length.
Beyond fighters
The versus thumbnail works for any comparison. A cheap kettle against an expensive one. A cat against a robot vacuum. Two phones, two cities, two diets. Lighting everyday objects like fighters, with glow and smoke, is part of the joke and still tells the viewer exactly what the video compares. For a price-led take on the same idea, see our MrBeast-style thumbnails.
Original fighters
The examples here use invented fighters only. Matchup channels that create their own recurring characters get two benefits: no question about who owns the images, and thumbnails nobody else can copy. If your matchups are about existing characters, avoid the show's logo and title card and build your own branding.
Test it small
A VS thumbnail has a lot of detail. Check in the YouTube thumbnail preview that both fighters and the VS still read at feed size, and compare versions in the thumbnail tester. Export at 1280 × 720 (see the YouTube thumbnail size guide).
