Fortnite improvement guides and Project Retrac (older seasons)

Flow makes Fortnite improvement videos (practice routines, editing, settings, game sense) and, lately, videos about playing older seasons through Project Retrac. The thumbnails never show a face: a skin mid-build, heavily saturated purple and blue, under one short gold headline.

Compared with the median of the last 30 uploads: 13K views.

How to Improve in Fortnite So Fast It Feels Like Cheating... (watch on YouTube, new tab)

The frame is a clean before and after: grey half with a red X and a red-outlined skin, colour half with a green check and a green-outlined skin, and 'GET BETTER FAST' in big gold letters. The transformation can be read in a second, which probably suits a promise as broad as improving fast.

I Played Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 4 in 2026... (Project Retrac) (watch on YouTube, new tab)

The thumbnail does not explain the topic at all: just 'THIS IS SO FUN', a gold rank emblem and the duck sticker over a bright build fight. The nostalgia in the title (an old season played in 2026) may have done most of the work, with the thumbnail adding the emotion. Later uploads in the same banner-and-icons layout landed lower, mostly between 0.6 and 3.2 times the median.

The BEST Fortnite Practice Routine to Go PRO In 2026 (watch on YouTube, new tab)

'PROS HIDE THIS ROUTINE' in lime green, white and yellow, with a red arrow pointing at a skin in mid-air. The title says 'best practice routine'; the thumbnail turns it into a secret, which is a second reason to click rather than a copy of the title.

What Flow's thumbnails have in common

  • Two templates, one per era

The coaching videos use three stacked words in thick yellow and white letters with a dark outline ('GET BETTER FAST', 'PROS DO THIS'). Since about September 2026, almost every upload uses one gold headline banner across the top ('RETRAC IS PEAKING', 'ITS PERFECT', 'IS IT WORTH IT?') over a bright build-fight screenshot.

  • Before and after in one frame

The best tutorials split the image in two: a grey, desaturated 'before' side with a red X and a red outline around the skin, and a colourful 'after' side with a green check and a green outline. 'GET BETTER FAST', 'EDIT BETTER FAST' and the '120 FPS' to '360 FPS' settings video all use it.

  • No face, the skin from behind

Flow does not use a camera or a close-up character face. The player is a small skin seen from behind, jumping or building, so the text and the colours do the work.

  • Icons as shorthand

Recent thumbnails add two icons on the sides: a gold crown-shaped rank emblem, a sunglasses duck sticker in a green square, or a blue Fortnite 'F' tile. They act as quick labels for 'ranked', 'Retrac' or 'Fortnite news' without extra words.

  • Text gives the feeling, the title gives the topic

The thumbnail rarely repeats the title. 'I Played Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 4 in 2026...' becomes 'THIS IS SO FUN'; 'No Matter What Happens, FORTNITE Will NEVER die...' becomes 'FORTNITES ALIVE!' next to a player-count screenshot.

What you can borrow

Ideas to take to your own channel

  1. If your video promises a change, show both states in one image: a grey 'before' half and a colourful 'after' half, marked with an X and a check. Flow's two biggest tutorials both use this.
  2. Make the thumbnail text add something the title does not say. 'PROS HIDE THIS ROUTINE' adds a secret to a title about a routine.
  3. When a topic works, give it a fixed look so regular viewers spot the series, but check the numbers: after the first Retrac video hit 6.2 times the median, later ones in the same layout mostly landed between 0.6 and 3.2 times.
  4. Long 'course' videos can travel if the thumbnail names them as a guide: the two-hour 'ULTIMATE FORTNITE GUIDE' reached about 27,000 views, twice the median.
  5. Tournament diaries with a posed skin and 'SO CLOSE.' sat near 4,000 to 5,000 views, about a third of the median. Broad improvement promises pulled far more than personal match recaps on this channel.

How to Improve in Fortnite So Fast It Feels Like Cheating...

YouTube rounds public counts (118K, 1.2M…), so every number here is approximate. The multiple is a video's views divided by the median of the channel's recent uploads: ×3 means three times the usual audience. A high multiple is a lead worth studying, not proof that the thumbnail caused it: the topic, the timing and YouTube's recommendations play a part too. Click-through rate and impressions are private; only the channel owner can see them.
